Liver support devices

چکیده
The liver performs a myriad of functions including immune, metabolic, synthetic and excretory functions, which play a crucial role in maintaining function of other organs and body homeostasis.1 Although the liver has a remarkable capacity for regeneration, after a severe acute insult in acute liver failure (ALF) or an acute hepatic insult in a patient with underlying pre-existing chronic liver disease (acute-on-chronic liver failure), the critical mass of hepatocytes required for maintaining homeostasis becomes impaired.

The frequency of bacterial contamination and diversity of drug resistance patterns in devices and staff of endoscopy and colonoscopy units
Background: This study aimed at analyzing microbial contamination in medical equipment, environment, and staff of a gastroenterology unit. Methods: Samples of gastrointestinal imaging devices, the environment, and staff were collected using standard swab-rinse technique and biochemical or molecular characteristics of the isolates, their susceptibility to antibiotics, and similarit...
متن کاملBioartificial liver support: developments in hepatocyte culture and bioreactor design.
Bioartificial liver devices aim to support patients with acute liver failure (ALF) until orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) or spontaneous recovery due to hepatic regeneration can occur. However, initial clinical experiences with two devices have indicated that functional efficacy in this setting may be less than in the experimental situation. Several fundamental issues remain unresolved, i...
متن کاملArtificial liver support: potential to retard regeneration?
HYPOTHESIS The concept of an "artificial liver" has been in development for over 40 years. Such devices aim to temporarily assume metabolic and excretory functions of the liver, with removal of potentially hepatotoxic substances, thereby clinically stabilizing patients and preventing deterioration while awaiting transplantation. If sufficient numbers of viable hepatocytes remain, regeneration a...
متن کاملTemporary Liver Support : Current Concepts
463 Liver failure occurs either as acute liver failure (ALF) developing de novo or as acute decompensation of chronic liver disease (ACLF). The clinical manifestations are fairly similar characterised by multiorgan dysfunction characterised by encephalopathy (HE), hypotension, and renal failure (HRS).1,2 Unlike chronic decompensation of end-stage liver disease, ALF and ACLF are potentially reve...
متن کاملLiver, Bio-Artificial
The liver is one of the most complex and metabolically active organs in the body and performs many detoxification and protein synthetic functions that are essential to life. Extracorporeal bioartificial liver (BAL) systems consisting of functioning, viable hepatocytes may provide temporary support for patients with acute hepatic failure and save the lives of patients awaiting orthotopic liver t...
متن کاملThe elusive goal of liver support--quest for the Holy Grail.
The history of liver support devices is traced from early attempts with dialysis based on the known dialysability of ammonia--the major identified toxin in liver failure--and exchange transfusion with removal of protein-bound toxins, to the later techniques based on whole organ perfusion in extracorporeal circuits. Perfusion through charcoal as an adsorbent represented a major advance and remai...
